MSHS joins Catch-up Fridays, ignites reading passion

Malvar Senior High School (MSHS) joined the roll-out of the nationwide implementation of Catch-up Fridays today, aligning with the Department of Education's (DepEd) initiative that is outlined in DepEd Memo 001, s. 2024.

Catch-up Fridays represents a learning mechanism designed to strengthen foundational, social, and relevant skills necessary for realizing the goals of the basic education curriculum. It is among the many priority programs of DepEd under the MATATAG Agenda whose focus is to enhance learners’ academic performance with emphasis on reading.

Under this initiative, all Fridays in January 2024 will be intended for the "Drop Everything and Read" (DEAR) activity that is why Grade 11 and Grade 12 students in MSHS were asked to bring their preferred reading materials and were given time in their respective classes to read.

As part of the National Reading Program (NRP), DEAR is a response to the call for enhancing students’ literacy skills and nurturing a reading culture among them.

The time allocated for Catch-up Fridays is strategically designed to provide learners with opportunities for reading intervention and enhancement. This includes the use of developmentally appropriate reading materials, catering to diverse learning styles and interests.

MSHS’ participation in Catch-up Fridays signifies a commitment to student development and the cultivation of a love for reading. By embracing this innovative educational approach, the school aims to create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that goes beyond traditional grading and focuses on holistic growth.
